Number one thing if you are stuck on the side of the road make sure you are as far off the road way as possible. Number two is to block the tires with chucks or large rocks to prevent the car from rolling off the jack. Number three places out safety cones or flares in front of and behind your car. This will help passing motorists see you, giving them enough time to pass you safely. The only other safety tip I can suggest is to please be safe while using a jack. Make sure it is placed in a safe place to lift the car and to always lower it slowly preventing you or the car anymore damage. Always check your air pressure in the spare tire before driving off. If it is low get air into it as soon as you can. Plus I would say after another 100 miles of driving on the tire it is good to recheck the air pressure and to make sure the lug nuts are still good and snug.

Removing the flat tire

The first thing you will need to do is loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. You can use either the four way wrench (usually located in the trunk with the jack) or a socket wrench with a breaker bar. If the lug nuts are covered up the cover can be either pried off or removed with a special key provided with the car. I usually keep my key in the glove box. Then the next step is to jack the car up so the tire is lifted of the ground. Most cars are equipped with jack located in the trunk and there are marked areas on the frame of the car where you can place the jack so it is safe to use. I use my own hydraulic jack which I find a lot easier and faster. After the car is safely raised up you can finish removing the lug nuts and place them in a safe place so they don’t get lost or scattered around. Now you are ready to remove the tire. Lifting up on the tire and pulling it towards you should work but if the tire is stubborn you may have to rock it back and forth to break it loose. After you have removed the tire place it safely out of the way or in the trunk of your vehicle or wherever the spare tire is located.

Mounting the good tire

I find it easiest to place the good tire on the ground just in front of the lugs and then sitting on the ground just in front of it with my legs startling both sides. If you have some lube handy, it might be a good idea to coat the lugs with it. This will help make the nuts easier to remove the next time you have to change or rotate your tires. Then I line the holes on the rim of tire up with the lugs and lift up the tire and slide it on the lugs. Now while holding the tire flat up against the wheel you can start the lug nuts back on their posts hand tightening them until you has all of them on. Now you can use your four way or socket wrench to tighten them almost all the way. Start with the nut at the top and then tighten the one opposite working your way around the tire so that the tire is mounted evenly. After you’re done with this you may lower the car down off the jack slowly. Then you can tighten the lugs firmly. I would go about a quarter of a turn past snug.

Summer time is coming. Summer is just around the corner. So will be summer heat and breakdowns of automotive air conditioning systems – perhaps either yours or those of other motorists and vehicle owners.

It’s not just as easy to work on an automotive air conditioning system as “opening the fridge”. What basic steps and precautions should and must be employed when it comes to being around as well as working on these automotive air conditions be it car, truck, van or S.U.V.

First of all avoid contact with charged refrigeration systems, even when working on another part of the vehicles air conditioning system or vehicle. For example if a heavy tool comes into contact with a section of copper tubing or a heat exchanger it can easily cause the relatively soft and even fragile material to rupture. This is especially and evens more true and an inherent danger if the part or component is under direct pressure.

Next when it comes necessary to apply force to a fitting which contains refrigerant, such as when checking and verifying that all securely tightened , be sure to make it a practice and indeed habit to use a solid wrench on both parts of the fitting involved, well at least to how much is both practical in the situation or possible. It can be said by doing so, that this will best avoid putting “torque” on the refrigerant tubing. On top of that, it is advisable if at all possible to use either tube or line wrenches when tightening “flare “nut fittings.

It is always best and wise practice and now indeed not allowed and illegal according to the rules of most states and regions not to ever discharge an air conditioning system merely by loosening a fitting or removing service valves. To do so is to risk large fines, your mechanics license and accreditation and of course your reputation and livelihood. What used to be standard practice years and years ago in the automotive trade is now simply not allowed and illegal on top of that.

When working on systems make it a practice never to start a system without first verifying that both service valves are back seated. If so equipped and that all fittings throughout the system are snugly connected. As well avoid applying heat to any refrigerant line or storage container. Charging may be aided and assisted by using water heated to 125 degrees F ( that is equivalent to 52 degrees Celsius) to warm the refrigerant container or containers. However never ever allow a refrigerant storage container to sit out in the sun, much like you are careful never to leave over inflated tires in a similar situation. Or near any other source of heat – such as an auto radiator.

Lastly two points. First of all even though it may be in the hot dead of summer always remember that frost bite from rapidly deflated liquid refrigerant is always a safety concern and danger inherent in this field of auto repair. It’s no accident that often the work of repair of auto air conditioners is left to highly trained specialists. If frostbite does occur, it should be treated by first warming the area with cool water, and then gently applying petroleum jelly. A physician should be consulted.

Finally make it a solid point always to wear protective goggles when working on an air conditioning system. Accidents can happen in a flash when working on air conditioning systems. Your eyes are a most precious gift, resource and tool to anyone working on and working with automotive vehicles Always wear eye protection when working with and on auto air conditioning systems.

This way both you and your customers will be happily and safely driving down the roads and highways in cool air conditioned comfort.

When you think about emergencies, diving into your toolbox for help may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But when it comes to tools that may be needed in an emergency situation, you likely have them sitting in your toolbox in your garage already. Take a look around your home and office. That can opener in your kitchen is essential in the event you find yourself without power and needing to open a can. And that is just one example of tools you probably have laying around your home and office that can be helpful in an emergency situation.

Keeping a wrench in an easily accessible space is a good idea. When a natural disaster such as an earthquake happens, a wrench is needed to turn off the gas to protect yourself and your family against a possible gas leak from damaged gas lines. Wrenches can also be used to turn off water lines in the event of a breakage or other emergency. Tools that may be needed in an emergency situation also include screwdrivers and pry bars. It is not only your own family that may need help, but your neighbors as well. Should disaster befall your neighborhood, your tool kit can be of great use. Make sure it is stocked well.

Depending on your situation, tools that may be needed in an emergency situation can include traffic cones and flares useful for cordoning off areas where a car accident has happened. In the event of fire or a tree falling or other disaster, you may find a fireman’s ax to be very useful. Likewise, a saw is a necessary tool that can help you out in many emergency situations.

As you can see, there are many tools and utensils commonly found in your home and / or office that can make a world of difference when you find yourself in the unusual circumstances of an emergency situation. As is the case with the rest of your emergency supplies, it is important to have your tools properly stored and marked so that they are easy to find in that moment of need. Tools that may be needed in an emergency situation include adjustable wrenches in several sizes, a pipe wrench, pry bar, bolt cutters, saw, sledge hammer, can opener, pliers, fireman’s ax and screwdrivers; just to name a few. Please remember that every individual, employer, or organizations emergency needs are unigue and should be custom tailor to fit the situation.
